French women are the epitome of style, class and beauty in my opinion. In fact, they are one of two reasons why I fell in love with a bold red lip.
The first reason being my mum who always rocked a bright red lip when I was young. I would look at her at think she was the most beautiful woman in the world. In fact, she used to wear a very chic black and white spotted dress, with a big bow in the back and a bright red lip. Even she was rocking the Parisian look back then. Like mother like daughter they say.
So since I was a young girl I have always loved red lipstick.
A woman is never more striking, more powerful or more feminine than when she is wearing a red lip (in my opinion).
I’m not saying that a woman can’t be strong or powerful without a red lip. However, if you can rock a boardroom and a red lip, that takes extra commitment. A red lip can be quite high maintenance. But it shows the world that you have your shit together enough to put up with said maintenance.
So unsurprisingly, I have a few red lipsticks in my collection. Every now and again, maybe once a week, I’ll top off my full face of makeup with a bold red lip.
Lately I have been indulging in a LOT of French therapy (no, not JUST red wine and cheese), but music, language, reading and more notably, beauty. And from a beauty point of view it all starts and ends with the infamous, the chic, the ever bold and beautiful RED LIP.
Inspired by the book “How to be Parisian wherever you are” and in my quest to feel (and therefore be) more Parisian in real life, I decided to follow the Parisian woman’s beauty style. For a week I wore very little makeup (mascara and concealer only) and topped it all off with red lipstick.
At first I was apprehensive about wearing such a bold lip with no other makeup. I thought I would look tired and plain because my usual day to day look is a full face of makeup – including much bronzer and highlighter. Sure I was wore concealer and mascara, which helped to bring a little more life to my face, but I didn’t feel put together or overly striking in any way.
But as soon as that red lip was on, I felt my confidence soar. It was magic.
Instead of feeling ridiculous for wearing such a bright, bold lip with no other discernible makeup, I actually felt incredibly confident. The red on my lips gave color to the rest of my face. It pulled the pinky tones of my cheeks and added a boldness to my look that was otherwise very flat. I felt stronger and surprisingly more sophisticated than I would have thought. It picked me up like a double shot latte picks me up in the morning.
And perhaps that is the secret those perfectly imperfect Parisian women are keeping. The red lip can save any look, any mood, any situation.
It is a sure-fire necessity in your beauty case if you haven’t got one already.
So if you now thinking “hmm I’d like to get me some of that magic” here are some gorgeous cruelty free lipsticks to set your confidence soaring.
