Dry lips are a bummer. The good news is is that they are SO EASY to fix that you can do it while you sleep!
Dry lips can be caused by a number of factors. Dehydration, dry air, too much sun exposure, habitual lip licking etc etc.
I usually get dry lips from wearing liquid lipstick too many days in a row. I know I shouldn’t do it but it just feels so good to be bad sometimes…
But regardless of how your lips become dry, if you follow the 3 steps below before you go to bed, you can easily get them back to soft, hydrated, kissable lips that you love!
1. Drink Up
First thing first – hydrated lips start from within. You want to make sure your body is sufficiently hydrated because while you’re asleep it is going without water for hours and that doesn’t help your dry lips at all. So grab a big glass of water and drink up!
The next thing you want to do is to remove the dry skin using an exfoliator. For the quickest option use whatever facial exfoliator you have available gently buff you lips with it. Lately I have been using my Dermalogica Microfoliant Thermafoliant exfoliator from their Age Smart collection, which is a self-heating skin polisher that I LOVE. I just take a small amount of this exfoliator and rub it gently into my lips while in the shower until I feel like I have removed at least two layers of dry skin 😉
If you don’t have a facial exfoliator on hand, you can easily make your own with 1 tsp of brown or caster sugar and 1tsp of coconut oil. Don’t have coconut oil? Olive oil or honey will do. If you’re in a hurry, use a wet washcloth or a soft toothbrush and gently rub across your lips.
3. Pucker Up
Once you get into bed, apply a generous layer of lip balm. Currently I am using the Dermalogica Age Smart Renewal Lip Complex which uses a blend of Avocado Oil and Shea and Cocoa Seed butters to soften and hydrate the lips.
However, you can use any other nourishing lip balm that you prefer.
Time To Sleep!
Now that you have hydrated your body, removed the dry, flaking skin on your lips and applied a nourishing lip balm it is time for some well earned zzz’s. After a night of sleep you should awake from your slumber with soft, kissable lips ready for another round of liquid lipstick torture 😉
Follow these simple steps every time you need to repair dry lips and remember that the most important trick to maintaining soft lips is by drinking lots of water and applying a good lip balm regularly. During the day, look for a lip balm that has SPF for some added protection.
