Recently I was going through my makeup collection when I realised that I had 2 very similar liquid highlighters in gold shades – the Josie Maran Argan Englightenment Illuminizer and the Australis Mineral Face Highlighter. So I thought to myself, I wonder if the Australis highlighter would be an affordable dupe for the Josie Maran highlighter… here is how they compare:
Before we get into it, let’s see what the brands have to say about these highlighters, so we can give them a fair comparison. Here is what Josie Maran has to say about the Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer:
This illuminiser brings an inner glow to skin by mimicking the natural radiance of healthy skin. A surge of hydration and nourishment is supplied to the skin through the inclusion of Argan oil, whilst Madonna Lily and Poet’s Narcissus work to brighten and even skin.
Here is what Australis has to say about the Mineral Face Highlighter:
Get your glow on with this lightweight cream highlight.
Hahaha, I love Australis’s no-frills description. I guess we all know what a highlighter does anyway…
Both are 15g but the Josie Maran highlighter retails at $37.00 while the Australis highlight only costs $16.95. Both highlights come in a pump bottle, the Australis one is plastic and the Josie Maran one is glass. Both highlighters are vegan-friendly according to the respective brands and both brands a cruelty-free.
Australis Mineral Face Highlighter – Gold
After: Australis Mineral Face Highlighter
The Australis highlight is very easy to apply to the skin. In these pics I have only dabbed the highlight on using my fingers after applying my foundation. However, it is quicker to apply using a damp beauty sponge. I adore the subtle glow it gives without being glittery, and often kick it up a notch by applying a powder highlight on top. This product also comes in the shade ‘Pearl’ which is stunning for pale skin tones and makes an amazing champagne highlight when mixed with the gold shade (yes I have both). Pearl has also been compared to Benefit’s Ultra Light Beam (which is not cruelty-free, and also much more expensive). The pump is really easy to use and control and the plastic bottle is great for traveling and clumsy hands…You can also find this highlight on sale quite often, especially from Priceline, for around $12 (hence why I have both the Gold and Pearl shades).
Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer
Josie Maran’s formula is much thicker than the Australis formula and dries quickly, which means you have to work fast! It does give a more intense luminosity to the skin, however, this comes at a price – it can look blotchy around the edges. It’s hard to tell in the above picture, but there is a pretty distinct line where the highlighter stops and the skin starts…I have always had trouble with this. However, the Josie Maran highlighter is fantastic when mixed in with foundation or other creams and gives the skin such a stunning luminosity. It is how I prefer to use the product personally. The packaging of this highlighter sucks. Sure it looks lovely and high-end, and it’s certainly more appealing to me than the Australis bottle, but in functionality, it is the pits. The nozzle and bottle are horrid – it pumps out way too much and you cannot control it and the glass bottle is prone to breaking. I know, because I just dropped my full bottle and it smashed into a million pieces, sending liquid highlighter everywhere.
The Chic Opinion
I’m not going to beat around the bush here – the Australis Mineral Face Highlighter is just as good, if not better than the Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer. It is significantly more affordable, you have much more control over how much you are using, the bottle won’t break if dropped, it blends onto the skin better and there is very little difference in luminosity once applied. Also, I don’t believe that such an expensive product should have such a bad pump, I always find that I am wasting product everytime I use it because it pumps out waaay more than I need.
Sure when it comes to mixing the highlighter into another product for added glow, the Josie Maran is superior, but it has the added ingredients of Argan Oil, Madonna Lily and Poet’s Narcissus to assist with brightness and nourishment. But you can still add the Australis highlighter to a cream product for a similar luminous effect.
I’m not saying the Josie Maran highlighter is not beautiful, it is, and there are people out there who absolutely adore this product. I just think if you are after a liquid highlighter, there are just as good, if not better, affordable options out there and the Australis Mineral Face Highlighter is just one of them!
